01What is a Paediatric Surgeon?
When your child needs medical treatment, you want them to have the very best care available. If your child needs an operation, you will want to consult a surgeon who is qualified and experienced in operating on children. As an experienced paediatric surgeon, Dr. Mahabubul Alam specialises in comprehensive surgical care for children whose development ranges from the newborn stage through the teenage years.
02What is the paediatric surgeon’s role in treating the child?
A paediatric surgeon examines the child, arranges the right investigations, explains the problem and the options to the parents, performs the operation when it is needed, and follows the child after surgery until recovery is complete. The paediatric surgeon also works closely with paediatricians, neonatologists, anaesthetists and oncologists so the child receives coordinated care.
03What types of treatment do paediatric surgeons provide?
Paediatric surgeons treat surgical problems of newborns, infants, children and adolescents — including neonatal surgery, paediatric urology, colorectal surgery, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery, neurosurgery and tumour surgery. Many operations can now be done with minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques, giving less pain, smaller scars and a faster recovery.
04What difference can a paediatric surgeon make?
Children have special needs: their organs are smaller, they respond differently to anaesthesia and illness, and they may not be able to describe their symptoms. A paediatric surgeon has dedicated training and experience in these differences, which leads to safer operations, better outcomes and a calmer experience for both the child and the family.
05How can I get a serial or appointment?
Call the chamber number of the clinic you want to visit, or call / WhatsApp +8801711-950583. In Dhaka, Dr. Mahabubul Alam sees patients at Gulshan Maa O Shishu Clinic Ltd, Nodda, from 5 PM to 6 PM (Friday on call). Cumilla and Chandpur chamber timings are listed on the Contact page.
06What should I bring at the first consultation?
Please bring all previous prescriptions, test reports, ultrasound / X-ray / CT films, discharge papers and the child’s vaccination card. A short written note of the child’s symptoms and when they started is also very helpful.
07Is it safe for a newborn or small baby to have surgery?
Yes. With modern neonatal anaesthesia, warmers, ventilators and trained nursing, newborn surgery today is safe and success rates are high. Many congenital problems are best corrected early, sometimes within the first 24 hours of life.
