Paediatric gastrointestinal surgery is concerned with surgical problems of the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, bile duct and pancreas in children. It includes paediatric hepatobiliary surgery — an area of special interest backed by Dr. Mahabubul Alam’s work at the National Gastroliver Institute and his research on choledochal cyst.
Wherever suitable, keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery is used so that children have less pain, smaller scars and a faster return home.

Symptoms that need attention:
- Repeated projectile vomiting in an infant
- Green (bilious) vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain or distension
- Yellow eyes with pale stool in a newborn
- Red-currant jelly stool
