Paediatric Surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions in children. The conditions can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired (developing after birth).
Children are not small adults — their anatomy, physiology and emotional needs are different. Every operation is planned around the child: the right anaesthesia, the smallest effective incision (or keyhole surgery where suitable), and family-centred post-operative care.
Common congenital anomalies in children:
- Inguinal hernia
- Hydrocele
- Undescended testis
- Umbilical hernia
- Different types of cyst, sinus and fistula
- Intestinal structural anomalies
- Cleft lip and palate
Common acquired surgical problems in children:
- Appendicitis
- Abscess
- Intussusception
- Rectal polyp
- Rectal prolapse
- Intestinal obstruction
- Abdominal trauma
- Ovarian cyst
- Tumours
- Phimosis
- Paraphimosis
- Balanitis
- Balanoposthitis
- Torsion testis
